Preacher, while happily dipping into the ersatz mythological/ supernatural hinterland that forgivably pretentious comic artists have found so convenient - God, the devil, angels, the Grail, vampires, Illuminati-inspired conspiracy theories, and millennial tension - uses them as a means of meditation on more human and timeless themes: friendship, masculinity, honour, love. Still, as I have said, this is the best example of it around, barring Posy Simmonds's Gemma Bovery, of course.
